Discovering Short Stories Anecdotes Musings

While it can sometimes be difficult to find the time to listen to a specific radio show, there are stations which provide an ON DEMAND option. In one case, as public broadcast radio has so many different shows and offerings, most public radio stations provide this platform. As such, when desiring to explore short stories anecdotes musings, locating the show Selected Shorts on one of these stations can often be a good way to listen to some great short stories.

Selected Shorts, now in it's 30th year, is recorded live the Porter Street Theater at Symphony Space on Broadway and remains so popular that performances are often sold out well in advance. While the Selected Shorts is considered one of the premiere reading series in New York City, the podcasts also rates extremely popular on public radio and iTunes.

The diverse and unique themes of each week's show on which a work is based is mostly likely the reason for the show's ongoing popularity. For, the show most often has themes which tie into some aspect of life, love, religion or politics. In one of the most recent episodes, the reader is reading a story called "There Was Once, " during the episode, Margaret Atwood interrupts anytime there is questionable material, none of which is that politically incorrect.

While the Selected Shorts stage has been graced by the likes of Kathleen Turner, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Shannon, Michael C. Hall, Claire Danes, Jane Curtain, Zachary Quinto, Paul Giamatti, Anika Noni Rose, Sigourney Weaver, Holly Hunter, Blythe Danner, Josh Radnor, Joan Allen, BD Wong and Maggie Gyllenhaal, there have also been numerous others perform and read these stories on stage.

For those who can get to the Porter Theater in New York City, seeing the show live can also be an incredible experience. Still, having the ability to listen to shows live on the radio or on demand can also provide for a great deal entertainment any time day or night.

Like radio, films can also be a great outlet for telling stories, short or otherwise. While this is the case, most students in a theater arts program will have to create at least one short film during a college career. In one case, Humboldt State University hosts a film festival each semester in which these student films are selected and played at the Arcata Theater, the oldest operating theater in the country.

Independent filmmakers also like to make short films to submit to various contests and festivals around the world. In doing so, the film gets to more audiences, especially when the filmmaker can submit to multiple locations. For, whether a short story, book of short stories or film, each story needs the right audience.

Ultimately, whether listening to Selected Shorts, reading or writing Flash Fiction or entering a film into a local, regional or national contest, readers and writers can often gain a great deal of enjoyment. If interested in the radio program, most PBS stations in the United States have a local outlet which most likely has an App for Android and IPhone in which listeners can select a number of programs from the On Demand menu free of charge.
