The Value Of Author Visits Assemblies

By Martha Roberts

There is no other known way to involve students in writing, reading and a creative learning process than author lectures. Hiring a credible author who is knowledgeable and has written several reading materials, would be the best way to mentor your students. It is not even the reading materials these authors have written that makes this process meaningful. It is because meeting the experts in person makes this whole writing process, books, and talent, real to students and teachers and easily accessible. This article highlights some benefits of author visits assemblies.

They encourage reading. Most students find reading tiresome and stressful and therefore contributing to their poor class results too. After a mentorship program from an expert, students shed away their old reading habits and becomes serious with eagerness to read more and more materials. They learn that to become a prominent writer, you must develop a reading habit.

They promote creativity. Getting mentorship from various authors with different exposures, helps a student boost his creativity. Various experts use different approaches in writing, and hence every experience with different experts, learners get a chance to learn something new and creative ideas.

These gatherings make the students and teachers become risk takers. The fear of what people would think about your idea is what hides most people from pursuing their talents and skills. In many cases during an assignment, a student is focused on doing what adds up to his grade and fears doing anything extra. Mentorship session from an expert encourages one to become a risktaker of what ignites their interest without the fear of judgment.

These meetings stimulate ideas in students and teachers. An author visit in your institution always has a great impact on students and teachers too. It jumpstarts ideas and creativity for learners to become innovators or writers following their interest. When a writer shares his life story and path to where he is, people familiarize with the situation better and realize their limits towards their goals.

They validate teachers. You find that a teacher may teach the same thing over and over, but it does not seem to sink into the mind of the student because of selective listening until he hears it from a writer. Therefore, when these experts visit schools and give the same information their teacher gave, they admire it and understand the context better, validating what their teacher taught.

They also help create friendships. It is always to the best interest of every student or teacher to make friendship with such an expert because after all, they get to consult him later for guidance in career goals especially for those with interest in writing. These experts usually have communication channels in which people can contact them for example via social media, emails or if lucky enough, a personal number.

These meetings motivate writing. When these experts visit classrooms with their favorite writing tricks and tips, they get the students motivated to become writers. Hearing a real-life experience from a published writer about ideas of writing and publication gets students and teachers thinking of ways to start doing the same.
