Tips To Being A Freelance Travel Writer

By Sarah Hughes

For those who love to write and for those who love traveling to various places around the globe, there is a great opportunity to take. These days, there is a high demand for travel writers because of the presence of many blogs and websites that delve into this subject matter. If one wants to take this road to become a freelance travel writer, then here are a few tips to help.

The first thing that he has to do is to brush up on his writing skills. The best way to do this is to first get a writing job, in for example, a magazine or an ad agency and build credibility from there. If one wants to enter this field, then he is selling both his name and his skills both of which need to be enhanced.

From here, there are two paths to go into wherein he can offer his services to clients as a freelancer. With this, he may agree with the client that his trips will be subsidised. The other option is for him to go independent and make a travel blog or website of his own and subsidise his own travel.

If he decides to go with the second option and become independent, then he must find a way to finance his trip. One option is to get an investor or a financier who is willing to invest in this kind of venture. Another option is to save up for a trip and start out small in more affordable place.

Regardless of the choice, the primary thing that one has to do is to simply go to different places. Now when he decides to become a writer, he must first choose a niche that his clients or his readers can recognize him for. It can be a writing niche in exotic food, exotic places to visit, popular tourist attractions, hole in the wall visits, or even cultural studies.

Now at this point, one may be thinking it might be easy to get into this field because it is easy to just Google places and write about them. While this does hold true, it can only take one so far in this type of field. If one would really want to go serious in this field, then he has to really visit different places otherwise readers will eventually find out and he can lose credibility.

When he gets back from his travels, then he must already get started to work on his material. If he is a freelancer for clients, then he does not need to worry too much about marketing and promotion since the client will do all of that. If one has his own website though, then he has to do his own marketing.

Basically, these are some of the things that one has to do if he wants to get into this sort of field. Now, do take note that it doing this sort of thing is quite tiring because of the traveling involved but if one really enjoys this, then it should be no issue. It is like combining work and pleasure at the same time.
