Thriller Novels From The Page To The Silver Screen

By Stephen Lee

In the modern world few people have time to sit down with a good book. Television and streaming from the internet have taken over from sitting down and enjoying a really good read. There is a wealth of literature which is also available online and thriller novels in particular often find their way onto our screens as a movie.

The best writers in this genre often get offered a film deal. The thrillers develop a story makes them easily adapted for cinema. There is normally a handsome hero or beautiful heroine as well as tension, romance and gun battles. Most producers make reasonable adaptations and the result is good entertainment. In a lot of cases however, the book is still more gripping than the film.

A book allows the reader to form their own image of the characters and scenes. The author can use description and language to conjure up the stunning landscapes or gory details of a crime scene. The reader's mind can imagine everything whereas on screen this task is done by the director or special effects team and the imagination is made redundant.

The heroines and heroes of these novels who discover plots for world domination or catch serial killers can become like one of the family. Many feature in a whole series of books and their character is revealed to the reader so you know how they are likely to react in any situation. Their looks are burned into the brain with phrases like buzz cut hair or tangled sun bleached locks.

When a well loved character is transferred to the silver screen sometimes the casting seems a little odd if you have read the books. The five foot three actor might bring in a good audience, but the character is clearly described as being a foot taller. The bad guy should be Irish not have an Australian accent. These deviations from the original can make you wonder if the producers have even read the book.

In some instances a movie can encourage someone to read the original work. This is a fantastic for authors to gain a new audience from the movie going public. Once introduced to the genre, the new reader may try other authors or more books in the same series. Whether fiction or factual material, reading can improve spelling, grammar and broaden a person's outlook on life.

Most books are published both in hardcopy and an online format. There are bookstores online where you can either purchase hardcopy by mail order or get the online version. They offer user reviews and synopsis so you have an idea of the style and story before you buy. As a regular customer they will also offer choices you might like or suggests things other people are reading.

There are many applications that can be downloaded to your phone or tablet so you can red anywhere anytime. Some of the sites offering e-books will offer new authors work free so that they and the author can get feedback. Classic books that are no longer copyrighted can also be found. Some of the best thrillers are ones written in the 19th century.
