Notable Survivalist Story Of Aron Ralston

By Walter Campbell

If you are familiar with the movie 127 Hours last 2010, then be aware that the subject portrayed by James Franco was actually based from the life of Aron Lee Ralston of an accident that happened in Utah in 2003. What happened was he used a pocketknife in giving amputation to his right arm just to escape the boulder that blocked him from getting out in the Blue John Canyon in five days. As painful as that sounds, he managed to survive.

Before that incident, the man was already known as a motivational speaker, engineer, and outdoorsman. He has been known to enjoy climbing mountains, specifically those that reach fourteen thousand feet in Colorado, and even canyoneering which led him to the incident. For more detailed information about what happened, let us discuss more about the notable survivalist story of Aron Ralston.

April 26, 2003 marks the beginning of his unforgettable experience by hiking as a start on this Blue John Canyon found on eastern Wayne County at Utah. During the arrival at slot canyon, a random boulder immediately dislodged or even crushed his right hand. He could not get out and not one person looked for him since he did not leave any note to other people about his hiking experience.

While freeing the arm desperately, he survived having only burritos to eat and a very little amount of water to drink for five days and almost gave up. Escaping via amputation of the arm did come into his mind during the moment of dehydration on day three. He had an experimentation or practice of cutting the forearm using tourniquets.

Day four gave him an idea that he really had to amputate through the bones even though he did not have the proper tools to do it. In addition, he forced himself in drinking his urine since he ran out of something to eat or drink on the fifth. His videotape still worked so he utilized it in saying goodbyes to the people that matter to him and even carved his name, birth date, and his assumed death date at the sandstone wall.

In amputating, he used the two inch knife for that. It got super dull which was caused in the carving. Still, he was successful.

He was already single handed but he had to hike out with the extreme heat of the sun and he had no phone in his ride too. Luckily, he found a family on a trip from the Netherlands. In the process of alerting the right authorities to save him, they gave him some water and Oreos for a while.

He thought he would bleed to death already since he lost about forty pounds. However, there were rescuers already when he had gone missing and flew using a helicopter. In fact, he was only rescued after six hours that the arm was cut.

He mentioned he could die if he did nothing. It takes thirteen people to move the boulder too. Lastly, he visited the place for a documentary and spread his ashes of the arm being cremated on that same spot.
