Knowing The Basics Of Fencing Lancaster Pa

By Kimberly Olson

Fencing is one of the most respected of European sports because it has been hailed as the primary form of dueling ever since the medieval times in Europe. Warriors of the king used to learn ancient variations of this art for killing their enemies and engaging them in battle. Nowadays, fencing lancaster pa has become an honored sport of a gentleman that many would take up.

For those who are taking up this sport, then one has to make sure that he perfects the most basic of stances. This is known as the on guard stance and it is the stance that one will use in order to get ready to launch his attacks. In order to attain this position, one just has to spread his legs shoulder length with the right leg in front and left leg at the back.

Now once one has already perfected the stance, then the next step is to concentrate on the footwork. First of all, one has to learn the advance since this is going to be the most common form of attacking. In order to advance to an opponent, one has to first lift the front leg then let the hind leg follow after and assume the on guard stance.

The second thing that one will learn is the retreat. Now when one would do the retreat, then he is actually doing the exact opposite of the advance with his back leg moving first. So being the opposite of the advance, this will be a more defensive move wherein one will step back from his enemy.

Now that one knows the basic footwork, then the next thing that one will be learning would be the types of attacks. The first kind of attack that one will learn would be the basic thrust which is actually a long forward stab. This is done in order to stab the opponent deep into the chest and is one of the best ways to score points.

The second technique that one would have to learn is known as disengagement and is actually a counter attack. In order to do this counter attack, one must first anticipate the thrust of his opponent then create a circular movement with his own sword to parry. Once he has parried the attack, then the next thing he must do is a thrust.

A harder move to learn would be the glide which is more of a surprise attack. To do this, one just has to slap the blade of his opponent and slowly advance to the opponent in small steps. This is pretty much like a jab in boxing but instead uses a foil or sword instead of fists.

So for those who are interested in this sport, then here is a good overview that will enable one to get an idea of what this sport is. Contrary to how it looks, this sport is actually quite fierce and intense. If one would want to take this up, then the best schools can be found in places near lancaster or Akron, PA.
