How To Ensure You Practice Sustainable Digital Printing

By Stacey Burt

Over the past several years, the importance of environmental issues has ebbed and flowed. During the depression years, it fizzled out but has been seeing a comeback in the public consciousness. This also includes the print, publishing and communities. Therefore, there is not a better chance of learning the basics of sustainable digital printing than this.

Digital Printing refers to transferring a document on a computer or other storage device to a printing substrate by means of a device that accepts text and graphic output. This recent process was developed to replace the earlier lithographic process which depended heavily on printing plates, rubber blankets and repulsive oils, usually found in offset printing.

The advent of environmental consciousness among the general public has caused producers and print companies to feel the need to adopt to their needs. This has brought rise to the new trend of products dubbed as going green. Printing has advanced to green printing with new materials and new forms of printers such as the laser jet and ink jet types.

People are continuously undertaking to preserve the environment. The various companies in digital print are also feeling the need to follow suit and design products that would auger well with their clients. Some of the initial steps most have taken is changing to production methods that use recycled, biodegradable and renewable materials such as recycled paper and vegetable inks.

Another undertaking by people who support the digital migration of printing patterns and methods is the new trend of designing, making and using less paper. This is determined in terms of the size and weight of the paper. Designers have discovered that trimming a small portion of the paper in the average book would save up to 1000 sheets.

Package design has also evolved and is now moving towards Eco friendliness and sustainability. They have adopted new printing and packaging designs that are both functional in multiple ways and reusable. This form of packaging can be re-purposed for other uses such as creating chairs, pet houses, and light bulb holders among other uses.

The digital printing field has borrowed a leaf from their engineering and architectural counterparts and adopted their own version of modular building. They have adopted it as modular design. Modular design is involved in creation of customized solutions with standardized and prefabricated materials which are easy to repair and update as well as recycle.

Product designers have also adopted a more liberal approach to this printing by involving font decisions in their approach. This is a two edged approach where they regard the ink and its constituents, but also the font face selected. They prefer those fonts that are easy to read as well as those considered to be ink efficient.

Digital printing has taken the printing and production fields by storm. The sustainability has been questioned, but recent progress has shown that it is proving itself adequately sustainable. The concept may be new but as shown, with the few steps, it is easy to understand and adopt.
